DTI monitors P1.06-B new investments in NorMin
By Apipa P. Bagumbaran

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, June 19 (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have monitored a total of P1.06-billion new investments in Northern Mindanao for the first quarter of 2012.

This amount is higher by 41 percent compared to the P755.27-million worth of investments that poured in the region during the same period last year, said Engr. Cecilio Y. Clarete, Chief Economic Development Specialist of the National Economic Development Authority Regional Office 10.

Except for Lanao del Norte, all other provinces in the region registered increases with Misamis Oriental, taking almost half of the total regional investments or about 43 percent. Misamis Occidental shares 35 percent while Lanao del Norte, Camiguin, and Bukidnon shared nine percent, eight percent, and six percent, respectively.

Clarete said majority of the P457.52-million worth of investments in Misamis Oriental went into the infrastructure and services, trading and service sectors, such as construction and expansion of tourism-related facilities like hotels and restaurants, and real estate development, which were mostly concentrated here in the city.

He added that investments poured in Misamis Occidental, which amounted to P367.26 million, were mainly from the procurement of various assets and infusion of working capital for lending cooperatives, as well as the construction of school building.

Lanao del Norte, on the other hand, registered major investments under service, trading and agri-based sectors that included expansion of construction services; construction of apartments, lodging houses and hospital; and establishment of a grocery store and farm supply.

According to Clarete, investments in Camiguin were mostly in the service and trading sectors that included tourism-related investments as well as the expansion of a cable television service provider and the establishment of new bank and pharmacy, while the P60.96 million investments recorded in Bukidnon came mostly from the establishment of a rubber plantation, expansion of pineapple production, construction of hydro power generation plant, and construction of buildings.

Meanwhile, Securities and Exchange Commission-registered investments have declined by 77 percent in terms of paid-up capital for new stock corporations, from P138.58 million in the first quarter of 2011 to only P31.98 million in the same period of 2012.

Clarete said the paid-up capital went down despite the 57 percent increase in the number of new firms, which were registered to put-up or expand their activities in the region because two major companies have applied with huge capitalization last year. (APB/PIA-10)

Dengue cases down by 81.2% in Mis. Occ. Due to intensified info drive
By Rutchie C. Aguhob

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental, June 18 (PIA) -- The intensified information dissemination campaign to fight dengue will continue in the three cities and 14 towns of Misamis Occidental. This, after the campaign proved to be very effective in the province.

Governor Herminia Ramiro said the info contained the 4S campaign which informed the public on “searching and destroying, applying self-protection measures, seeking early consultation, and saying ‘no’ to indiscriminate fogging."

The 2012 Disease Surveillance Report shows a total admittance of only 40 dengue cases in the different sentinel hospitals of the province, from January 1 to June 8 this year.

This was actually lower by 81.22 percent compared to 213 dengue cases in the same period of 2011, said Dr. David Mendoza, Head of the Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit of the Department of Health-Center for Health Development, Region 10.

The report also shows that the dengue cases of Mis. Occ.’s three cities were on the downward trend: Tangub, from 54 to four cases or down by 92.59 percent, Ozamiz, from 80 to 14 cases or, down by 82.50 percent, and Oroquieta City, from 18 to eight cases, or down by 55.55 percent.

On the other hand, the report shows a total admittance of 1,178 dengue cases regionwide during the period higher by 40.57 percent compared to 838 cases, in the same period of 2011.

The intensified information campaign, led by the Provincial and City Health Offices (PHOs/CHOs), is very much needed, especially now that the rainy season has begun.

“We would also like to maintain the low incidence of the dengue cases in all our local government units (LGUs) by increasing the awareness of the people about dengue and how it can be prevented,” the Governor, who is a nurse by profession, said.

It is expected that there will be more cases of dengue, this year, based on the yearly trending, hence, the LGUs are encouraged to intensify their campaign against the disease, Mendoza said.

Like the previous week’s report, the ages of dengue patients ranged from less than a month to 90 years old, with 55 percent of it being males.

However, the number of deaths remained the same, at two with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.17 percent, and that among the age groups, those with the age range of below 5 to 14 years old had the highest CFR of 0.39 percent.

Data per province also show the following: Misamis Oriental had 916 cases or 77.80 percent; Bukidnon, 125 cases or 10.6 percent; Lanao del Norte, 94 cases or 8.0 percent; Misamis Occidental, 40 cases or 3.40 percent; and Camiguin, three cases or 0.30 percent.

As to the cities, Cagayan de Oro registered the highest number of 640 cases or 54.30 percent, followed by Iligan, 62 cases or 5.30 percent and Gingoog, 33 cases or 2.80 percent; Valencia, 26 cases or 2.20 percent; Ozamiz, 14 cases or 1.18 percent; Malaybalay and El Salvador, 11 cases or 0.93 percent each; Oroquieta, eight cases or 0.67 percent; and lowest was in Tangub with only four cases or 0.33 percent.

In terms of increase of the dengue cases per province, Bukidnon registered the highest with 220.51 percent, followed by Misamis Oriental, 124.51 percent.

The dengue cases in Camiguin continued to decline or down by 80 percent and Lanao del Norte, down by 44.38 percent.

As to the cities, Valencia still posted the highest increase of 2,500 percent, followed by Malaybalay, 175 percent, Cagayan de Oro, 137.92 percent, Gingoog, 120 percent and El Salvador, 22.22 percent. But the dengue cases in Iligan went down by 34.04 percent, just like those of Tangub, Ozamiz and Oroqieta.

This time, however, the cluster of three or more dengue cases were noted in only 13, instead of 16, barangays of Cagayan de Oro City. (PIA 10, Mis. Occ.)
