Malaybalay to draw up roadmap for water supply management
By Ruby Leonora R. Balistoy
MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon, June 23 (PIA) -- The Malaybalay City Government Water Supply System (MCGWSS) and Malaybalay City Water District (MCWD) are drawing a roadmap for water supply management that will ensure adequate water supply in the city by 2021.
City Mayor Ignacio W. Zubiri said the present water supply set up should be reviewed to resolve consumers’ problems on water shortage in some parts of the city.
“It is imperative that we immediately find ways to fix this problem because despite the bounty of springs and abundant pristine water sources in Malaybalay, still we are facing problems on water supply,” the mayor said.
He added that the city government facilitated a geohydrological study to review whatever options available in order to deal with nagging issues on uneven water supply distribution and cope with the requirements and water needs of the city’s expanding population.
Results of the study presented recently by geohydrologists commissioned for MCGWSS showed that the city’s Water Treatment Plant can still cope with the needs of its consumers even up to year 2021 even as it maintains a per capita of 25 gallons per head per day, considering the city’s vast water sources.
The computer-simulated geohydrological study also showed that based on the data and information provided by Malaybalay City Water District and those gathered in the field this April 2012, the present unequal water distribution can be corrected without changing sizes of pipes or adding water tanks at strategic locations.
The experts, however, recommended installing three booster pumps along the system in order to address problems such as inadequate pressures at the tail ends of pipelines, low flow velocity, and differences in elevations between distribution points and service areas.
Installation of three water measuring devices with their respective gate valves was also recommended for continuous monitoring of pipeline leakage and wastage.
MCWD General Manager Juanito Aroa, on the other hand, said MCWD have been laying necessary groundwork for plans to flourish while resolving current issues on uneven water supply distribution.
Aside from keeping up with the national government’s program to increase water services, MCGWSS’ and MCWD’s other concerns are on watershed management, disaster mitigation, water distribution management, sewerage, and sanitation. (RLRB/PIA 10-Bukidnon)
