CDO and Iligan schools receive education assistance from USAID-funded program

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - Almost 10,500 students from cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan received new school kits as replacement for their school materials destroyed or washed away by Typhoon Sendong (‘Washi’) last December.

Provided by the Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) 3, a USAID-funded program under the oversight of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), the assistance augments educational support given to schools and students in heavily affected areas.

The DepED division offices of CDO and Iligan selected which the beneficiary schools and prioritized those that were severely affected by Sendong and those that receive minimal support from recovery efforts due to the inaccessibility of their location.

Overall, nine (9) schools from CDO and 11 from Iligan city were identified as recipients of the educational assistance. Each school was given new sets of books, dictionaries, and other classroom materials to facilitate the improvement of classroom set-up and the smoother conduct of lessons amidst the ongoing reconstruction of their respective areas.

The donated supplies can last up to the first semester of the following school year, depending on how the schools manage their resources.

“The kids are really happy with the new school kits they received. We prioritized giving the supplies to the higher levels because they are the ones who usually carry heavy school materials. Thank you po talaga,” said Rosita Bayron, principal of the Bayug Elementary school, one of the schools that were completely decimated by Typhoon Sendong.

“Even if we do not have our school site yet, we are one of the few schools that were able to gather many students on the first day of classes this year,” Bayron said, adding that their students currently hold classes at the covered gym of Iligan City East High School-Hinaplanon Complex.

Apart from the flooded school buildings, majority of the affected schools also lost computer units to Typhoon Sendong, such as Tuburan National High School (Digkilaan Annex) which lost 11 computer units, most of which were donated by GEM years back.

“Through GEM-USAID program, we had been providing necessary infrastructure and resources to enhance access to quality education in target communities in Mindanao,” said MinDA Chair Luwalhati R. Antonino.

MinDA's Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework has cited the need for adequate and reliable support infrastructure for education and disaster risk management that strongly enhances the peace and development initiatives for Mindanawons.

Since 2008, GEM 3 has provided school infrastructure improvements to elementary and secondary schools such as updating of school libraries, home economics rooms, multi-media center, and internet connection to far flung Mindanao barangays including Iligan city. (MinDA)

By: Pat Nano

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental – The Department of Ttrade and Industry (DTI), here, has intensified its campaign to plant bamboo trees as a program to protect the environment.

We have to accept that the climate has changed compared to the past and there is nothing we can do but adapt to it, Director Delia Ayano, DTI Provincial Director, said.

She said the numerous activities done by the human race has contributed so much to the present weather conditions, among which are the air pollution in industrial plants, motor vehicles, chemical used in fertilizers for plants and many more.

As a way to adapt to climate change and to prevent future disasters from happening, DTI has intensified its campaign to plant bamboo trees because of the benefits it brings to the environment.

Meanwhile, she said DTI and the Department of Education (DepEd) has signed an agreement for a bamboo planting program, wherein DepEd will encourage the school pupils to plant bamboo.

As soon as the bamboo is ready for production, DTI will process the raw materials for production of school furniture and fixtures, such as, cabinets, school desks, tables, book shelves, and many more for use by the Department of Education (DepEd).

There is a good market for the bamboo wood, because it is cheaper compared to other kinds of lumber and it is easy to grow and propagate.

Most of all, it responds to the need for lumber, especially with the campaign to stop the cutting of trees by the national government and it provides income to the communities, as well. (PIO/PIA-10 Mis. Occ.)

CAMIGUIN, Mambajao – A new 20 thousand cavans capacity (TCC) warehouse of the National Food Authority (NFA) now serves Camiguin province, boosting its storage capacity from 10,000 to 30,000 bags.

It is constructed in a 600 sq. m. lot leased by NFA from the local government and is situated adjacent to the NFA compound within the Government Center in Barangay Lakas of Mambajao town.

Camiguin were among the provinces classified to be critical in terms of rice supply.

Feature: Pro-poor Program and Sendong
By Cherly C. Moncay

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The permanent relocation that the city government is giving to thousands of homeless families means a new community will very soon rise in Calaanan, Canitoan in this city.

This new community which the Sendong victims will soon comprise, however, is not comparable to the evacuation centers where the beneficiaries have become so dependent on relief goods, food and other assistance delivered by concerned sectors, but will be an ideal community worthy of emulation.

The house-and-lots at the permanent relocation in Calaanan, according to Mayor Vicente 'Dongkoy' Y. Emano, are not 'dole outs' but are freely given to each beneficiary. They will be the occupants of these houses forever through certificates of award which the city government will issue.

As with all other pro-poor programs of Mayor Emano, particularly the 'Singkwenta-Singkwenta Program,' the Estate Management Division (EMD) is the department that would be most involved in the supervision, monitoring, and management of the new community composed of typhoon Sendong victims.

EMD representative Rubina Castro, project-in-charge of the Calaanan Relocation, clarified the city government, together with various government agencies, shall provide the necessary assistance in the form of livelihood projects for the beneficiaries.

"They will be taught in the field of livelihood. We will be profiling these folks so we can mark their skills and help them find jobs that best fit their skill levels," said Castro.

Castro further added that the EMD shall conduct an initiative which includes regular communication with the beneficiaries, strengthening of their spiritual convictions, and organizing them through the so-called Community-Based Structure (CBS) where leaders shall be picked right from within their community.

The community will be put under the jurisdiction of the barangay council of Canitoan and will be encompassed by the rules and policies of the same barangay.

All in all, the 63 hectare lot acquired by the city government in Calaanan, intended for the "Land for the Poorest of the Poor Program" of the Emano administration, has taken on a more noble status inasmuch as it has not only addressed the problems of the victims of demolition and conflagration calamities, but has also served as an instrument to help the victims of the typhoon Sendong rise and get back on their feet. Inmates join P-Noy’s “National Greening Program”
By Jeza Mae Sarah Sanchez

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – More than a hundred inmates of Cagayan de Oro City Jail was made to participate in the “Orientation on Forest Nursery Establishment and Operation” held last February 23, as a jumpstart to the pariticipation of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), region 10, to President Benigno Aquino’s intensified National Greening Program (NGP).

Ben Labininay, Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Farm Foreman and Nursery Manager who served as the Resource Speaker expressed with the more intensified greening program of the government comes now the increasing demand to produce more seedlings.

Hence, the Community Relations Service Unit of BJMP-10 came up with the idea of having the inmates actively involve themselves with the government’s NGP through establishing forest nurseries inside the jail facilities.

“The inmates don’t need to leave the jail in order to participate in this program,” said Jail Supt. Clint Russel Tangeres, City Jail Warden.

Our jail compound here in Brgy. Lumbia has vacant area large enough to accommodate the required seedlings and facilities and also has the necessary exposure to sunlight, Tangeres he further said.

The warden also narrated how the inmates are very enthusiastic to be a part of the project.

The whole concept is not just to raise more tree seedlings but more importantly it seeks to change the way the community think about trees and the environment.

With the thought that inmates who are inside jail facilities can contribute positive change for the environment, it seeks to somehow integrate into the consciousness of the people that a sustainable environment is everybody’s concern, said Tangeres. (BJMP/PIA-10)
