More than 5,000 runners participated in the biggest run the city has ever seen.

Based on singlets sold, Lanao del Norte had 100 registrants in the event participating in the 10K, 5K and 2K categories.

“We are truly thankful to Governor Khalid Dimaporo for his solid support to this activity. Despite being far from CDO, the Lanao del Norte contingent came here to participate in the Kapamilya run,” ABS-CBN anchor PJ dela Peña expressed.

Mis. Occ. Prov’l Gov’t. intensifies campaign to plant bamboo trees along rivers

OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental– Planting bamboo trees along the rivers is good alternative to the Banyan or the so-called “balite” trees.

Like the banyan tree, bamboo trees can absorb a good amount of rain water and has the characteristic to firmly hold the ground prevent soil erosion during flashfloods.

This the reason why the Misamis Occidental Provincial Government, together with the private sector, has intensified its campaign for the Misamisnons to plant bamboo trees.

“There is now a need to adapt to climate change and before it’s too late, we have to intensify planting trees to protect the environment,” Governor Herminia M. Ramiro said.

Aside from its potentials to provide a balance in nature, bamboo trees can provide livelihood because of the products that can be derived from it, such as, wood to build houses, fences, furniture, fixtures, raw materials for handicrafts and many more.

We learned that the bamboo tree cannot be easily uprooted and carried away by the flashfloods because the roots around it are deeply fastened to the ground.

Meanwhile, the Governor said people should properly dispose the unused portion of the bamboo, like the end branches after harvesting the tree trunk so that they cannot cause obstruction and prevent the natural flow of the river during heavy rains resulting in flashfloods and landslides. BFAR continues to warn residents near Murcielagos Bay in Mis. Occ. of red tide
By: Pat Nano

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has continued to warn the residents from eating shellfish gathered near Murcielagos Bay.

This, after BFAR has found out that the shellfish gathered from the bay, located between Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga del Norte, still tested positive of the red tide toxin.

It is possible that this condition is caused by chemical waste from the mountains that pour into the sea disturbing the micro-organism at the sea-bed resulting in the contamination of the shellfish and other sea products that is detrimental to a man’s health, BFAR said.

Particulary, the areas where the red tide alert has been sounded are those in the coastal areas of the towns of Calamba, Baliangao, Sapang-Dalaga, all of Misamis Occidental and that of Rizal in Zamboanga del Norte.

Meanwhile, BFAR has expressed concern that their warnings about the presence of red tide in the aforementioned areas have been ignored by the residents.

This was revealed by the interviews conducted by members of the Tingog Misamisnon Balita on some fishermen in the area, who said they continue to gather and eat the shellfish from the area because they have no other means of livelihood except fishing.

In fact, the fishermen said that they did not know about the warnings, but that they are not afraid since no one has died in the area because of the red tide toxin.

Aside from fishing for their daily consumption, the fishermen said they had no other means of livelihood that’s why they are forced to fish despite the warnings from BFAR. (PIO/PIA-10 Mis. Occ.)

(PIO/PIA-10 Mis. Occ.)

Philippine Army supports peace process in Mindanao
By Apipa P. Bagumbaran

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur- The Philippine Army (PA) fully supports the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and hopes for its success to achieve lasting peace in Mindanao.

This was expressed by Major General Emmanuel Bautista, commanding general of the PA, during his recent visit to the 103rd Infantry (Haribon) Brigade.

He said the intention is to abandon the armed struggle in Southern Philippines and reach a negotiated political settlement because the people in Mindanao are longing for peace and for development.

He added that when internal security issues are finally resolved the army can go back to its traditional role of preparing for the defense of the country against external threats.

Bautista arrived in Kampo Ranao on Tuesday to personally check the conditions of the Haribon troopers and find out how they can be supported in pursuit to the campaign on Internal Peace and Security Plan (IPSP).

The IPSP or “Oplan Bayanihan” is the counter-insurgency strategy that emphasizes winning the peace, not just defeating the enemy, as the primary focus in the conduct of military operations. (PIA 10)
