Fair trade can be a viable tool in fight against poverty, climate change and economic crisis – WFTO

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, May 15 (PIA) – Fair trade can be a viable contribution in the fight against poverty, climate change and economic crisis.

This was emphasized by Raelita Legaspi, representative of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), region 10, in a Youth for a Fair Trade Briefing at the Atrium of SM Cagayan de Oro, during the World Fair Trace (WFT) Day on May 14, attended by volunteers from the youth sector.

Legaspi said the WFT Day is an initiative of the WFTO, the global representative body of over 400 organizations committed to 100% Fair Trade and the authentic voice of fair trade and guardian of fair trade values.

The goal of the WFTO is to enable small producers to improve their livelihoods and communities through sustainable trading by delivering market access through policy, advocacy, campaigning, marketing and monitoring.

Around the world, millions of small producers, artisans, farmers and small-hold manufacturers, fair trade producers, traders, consumers celebrates WFT Day supported by the business and consumer community, policy makers and media, as well s by thousands of social movement, non-government organizations (NGO’s) and more than 100,000 volunteers.

This year’s theme of: “Trade for people, fair trade your world,” covers the strong belief in the need to put people and the environment at the heart of trade and consumption.

Legaspi said “Trade for people” means trade for sustainable development and local communities.
More than half a century of fair trade has proven that trade can be a most efficient tool for poverty alleviation, that trade can change lives and can change communities, she said.

Likewise, “fair trade your world” stands for private consumers to include fair trade in their shopping bag, for business to include fair trade in their supply and offices.

It also stands for local authorities and national governments to include fair trade in public procurement in a strive for responsible consumption.

Thus, fair trade is a good deal and a business case for all, from producers to consumers, Legaspi added.(WFTO/PIA-10)

Feature: Join the WFTO and go global, SHPII tells SME’s
By: Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, May 15 (PIA) – Small and medium enterprises (SME’s) in Northern Mindanao have been urged to join the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and hit the global market.

This was the advocacy of Loreta Capistrano Rafisura, President of the Salay Handmade Paper Industries, Inc. (SHPII) based in Salay, this province, during a forum , at SM Cagayan de Oro, as part of the activities to celebrate the World Fair Trade Day, yesterday, May 14.

Rafisura said joining the WFTO had been SHPII’s most significant blessing as it helped them improve their livelihood in the community through sustainable trading, world-wide, by delivering market access through policy, advocacy, campaigning, marketing and monitoring.

“It was actually WFTO which helped us find global market of our hand-made products in 15 countries, mostly from Europe, the United States of America and Canada, to name a few,” she said.

Rafisura also said that during the global financial crisis, it was also the WFTO that made representations with their world market and advised them to make adjustments in their designs for their markets to pay them at lower prices.

Producers of handcrafted sheets of paper which are created one by one by artisans from natural fibers of abaca (Musa textiles), and salago bark (Wikstroemia lancelota), SHAPII started with only 10 people as a civic organization in 1987.

Having no background in hand paper-making, it then networked with government and non-government organizations for the technical skills development towards achieving its missions through the “Yes, the Filipino Can,” battlecry.

From a production of one (1) bond-paper size hand-made sheet per worker per day, their workers, after the skills trainings, have increased their production, little by little. And after 23 years in the business, they now produce as much as 200 sheets per worker per day.

With a starting capital of Php9,000, of which P6,000 was won from a community raffle, SHAPII has ventured into the multi-million peso business that it is now and has given employment/livelihood to about 400 rural folks, 60% of whom are women.

Aimed at helping in the growth and development of its people through rural entrepreneurship in the art of handmade papermaking, pressed flower designs and crafting, SHPII has also made accolades in the education of their young.

In fact, it has already produced two (2) doctors of medicine (M.D) and currently sends to school almost 50 young, poor but deserving students.

Rafisura said their products are derived mostly from leaves and barks of trees, which are waste products. Such that most of their visitors from other countries, who came to see their production sites have looked into their water waste treatment facilities.

“After their visit, they would send us, some equipment through the WFTO on grant, which we are using now,” she added. (PIA-10)

Abad responds to the issue on deferment of Agus and Pulangi HEP Privatization
By: Ma. Regine M. Pines

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, May 14 (PIA) – The issue on the deferment of the privatization of Agus and Pulani Hydroelectric Plants have long been talked about and decided by the House of Representatives.

This was the message of Representative Henedina R.Abad of the lone congressional district of Batanes, Chairperson of the House Committee on Energy during a forum, yesterday, attended by the leaders of the Association of the Mindanao Electric Cooperatives (AMIRECO), held at Pryce Plaza Hotel, this city.

As early as the last quarter of 2010, and the first quarter of this year, there was already a resolution of the Committee on Energy of the House of Representatives that proclaimed and submitted for the preliminary discussion of the lower house about the deferment of privatization.

“Dapat po nating pasalamatan ang ating mga kinatawan sa Mindanao na nagpapaliwanag nito sa (We have to thank the Mindanao Congressmen who explained such resolution) to the Committee on Energy of the Lower House,” Abad said.

One of the problems of deferment is how they are going to raise funds to be able to rehabilitate the HEP’s, which amounts to around Php2 billion to Php3 billion, based on the Department of Energy (DOE) estimates.

There are also issues like the price of the electricity, and the cost of the subsidy, and where the government will get the fund to be able to finance the rehabilitation.

One of the issue is that “you can not heal the conflict by chopping it” it has to be solved. To be efficient, it has to be solved as a whole,” Abad said.

“Huwag po kayong mag alala sa amin kasi permi po ang desisyon (Don’t worry, we have to abide by our decision.) I have to remain faithful to the resolution that was passed by my committee,” she also said.

“We need to help our President and the administration now because there are many problems of the energy sector, but to attend to this problem, we need to be guided by the mistakes that we had experienced in the past,” Abad added. (PIA-10)

Other programs to be given priority attention are the watershed management to sustain adequate water supply, and integrated coastal resource management to prevent destruction of marine resources.

Also included are the riverbank protection to preserve saltbeds and fishponds downstream, food security, quarantine services, and urban greening.

The body also recognized the need for complementation and harmonization of sector and comprehensive land use (CLU) plans of the three municipalities.

Dacanay said another meeting of the municipal engineers of the said municipalities, together with the EMB, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Dept. of Transportation (DOTC), Ayala Land Inc., and HANJIN is scheduled for May 25. (NEDA/PIA-10)
