12,000 MT imported rice arrives CdeO
port
By Jorie C. Valcorza
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, January 23 (PIA)
– Two boat loads of imported rice from Vietnam are expected to arrive here in
the city to augment the present rice stock inventory of Northern Mindanao.
MV Dong An carrying 6,600 metric tons
of rice and MV Song Ngan with 5,950 metric tons of rice load are expected to
dock Cagayan de Oro port, today.
National Food Authority (NFA) region
10 director Javier P. Lozada, Jr. said these stocks would help ensure
sufficient rice supply for the region, after recent calamities
ravaged a number agricultural lands.
“These stocks will be positioned to
the priority provinces and will serve as buffer stocks for quick response in
any eventualities considering today’s climate situation,” Lozada explained.
Meanwhile, NFA’s selling price for
rice per kilo now pegs at P32. It’s well-milled rice, better alternative than
the regular-milled rice that they used to sell at P27 a kilogram. (JCV/PIA)

MisOr creates alliance to combat TB
By Sherlyn E. Lugtu
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Jan. 23 (PIA) –
The province of Misamis Oriental formed a multisectoral alliance to fight
tuberculosis.
Dr. Patricia P. Lim, Provincial
Health Officer, said the creation of the alliance, coined as Koalisyong Misamis
Oriental Batok TB (KOMBAT), is to establish a concerted effort utilizing
strategic interventions to fight tuberculosis in the province. Further, this is
to unify all TB efforts to different DOH and non-DOH agencies.
The Department of Health with the
technical assistance of the USAID Innovation and Multisectoral Partnerships to
achieve control of TB (IMPACT) are in continuous coordination with the province
of Misamis Oriental in the implementation of the National TB Control program,
especially in the localization of the Philippine of Action to control TB
(PhilPACT), said Dr. Teodoro B. Yu of the Philippine Business for Social
Progress (PBSP).
Dr. Yu said this movement is a
five-year project which started last 2012 and will end on 2017. The IMPACT
project has already been implemented and conducted in the National Capital
Region (NCR), and some areas in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Yu revealed that as of the latest
survey, there are unfortunately 75 Filipinos who die of tuberculosis every day.
Meanwhile, he said this airborne
disease is curable and therefore, patients of TB should not panic, be ashamed,
or hesitate to go to health centers or doctors to ask for cure.
He added there is no truth in the
rumors that an individual can be infected of TB by unintentionally using
utensils which were also used by a TB patient. TB can only be transferred
through coughing, sneezing and closely talking to a TB patient.
Yu mentioned the Directly Observed Treatment
(DOTS) is a type of treatment strategy wherein a TB patient is being cured and
scrupulously observed so to make sure the patient will really go through the
whole treatment process. (SEL/PIA10)
