Northern Mindanao joins 23rd National Statistics Month celebration

DE ORO CITY, Oct 2 (PIA) -- Northern Mindanao will join the Philippine
Statistical System (PSS) in the celebration of the 23rd National
Statistics Month (NSM) this October.
The whole month celebration here will be spearheaded by the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC-10) while the opening ceremony will be hosted by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-10.
Brenda Lynn M. Castro, officer-in-charge of the National Statistical Coordination Board in the region, the celebration will start tomorrow, October 3, at the Liceo de Cagayan University, with Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics Director Ma. Teresa V. Peralta as keynote speaker.
She said other speakers from the Research Institute of Mindanao Culture, Regional Tripartite Wage and Regulatory Board, Philippine Overseas Employment Agency and Technical Skills and Development Authority will also be gracing the ceremony to share some relevant information for data dissemination and appreciation purposes.
As part of the celebration, the RSCC-10 will also hold a tree-planting activity on October 12 and 19 at Barangays Balulang and Cugman, respectively.
The tree-planting activity, which is also in support of the government’s National Greening Program, will be conducted in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The celebration is pursuant to the Presidential Proclamation No. 647, declaring the month of October of every year as the NSM. It intends to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics, and at the same time, to ensure the support of the public in improving and enhancing the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
This year’s NSM celebration highlights decent work statistics with the theme, “Monitoring Progress on Decent Work through Statistics: Pathway to Inclusive Growth.”
Castro said this is to emphasize the importance of decent work statistics as empirical basis on the progress of efforts to reduce poverty and in achieving equitable, inclusive and sustainable development. (APB-PIA10)
DA 10 conducts agricultural food safety forum

DE ORO CITY, October 2, 2012 (PIA) – Bringing together players along
the food supply chain, the Department of Agriculture (DA) region 10
initiates, today, the conduct of a “Farmers-Consolidators-Supermarket
Forum: Ensuring Food Safety along the Supply Chain” here in the city.
DA
Executive Regional Director Lealyn A. Ramos stresses the need of
increasing their appreciation for food safety from “farm to fork”,
understanding further the supply chain management and food safety
aspects of farming.
The
activity aims to underline the principles and advantages of acquiring
the Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) standards and certification.
GAP is a private sector body that sets voluntary standards of certification for agricultural products around the globe.
Ramos
said coordinators from certified farms like Del Monte Philippines, will
share their experiences while undergoing the certification and benefits
that they have gained in the entire process.
The
Australian Agency for International Development (AusAid) technical
assistance to farmers group in achieving GAP certification is likewise

Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries are automatic PhilHealth members - PhilHealth

DE ORO CITY, Oct 2 (PIA) -- The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation
(PhilHealth) reiterated that beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilya
program are considered members of PhilHealth under its Sponsored
Program.
This was clarified by Merlyn Ybañez, PhilHealth-10 information officer, following complaints that some Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries were not admitted by some hospitals because they do not have PhilHealth ID cards.
Ybañez said Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries are automatic members of PhilHealth, and as such, they and their qualified dependents are entitled to the benefits under the National Health Insurance Program (NHIP), including primary care packages and all in-patient and out-patient care services.
She explained that beneficiaries who do not have PhilHealth ID cards yet can present their Pantawid Pamilya ID cards to avail of the NHIP benefits.
Ybañez further said Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries are likewise entitled to the "No Balance Billing" (NBB) policy.
The NBB policy, which applies to Sponsored Program members, provides that no additional amount will be charged to members and/or their dependents diagnosed with any of the 11 medical cases and 12 surgical cases under case payment and admitted to non-private accommodation beds (ward) of government hospitals.
Sponsored Program members are indigent families whose enrolment into the NHIP is made possible through the sponsorship of the local government units and private companies, and those families listed under the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction whose annual premium has been paid for by the national government.
Ybañez said that the distribution of the new Philhealth IDs for members under the Sponsored Program is currently ongoing.
She said the distribution activity in the different provinces in Northern Mindanao, dubbed PhilHealth Moves, will reach Bukidnon on October 4 and Iligan City on October 9.
Aside from the releasing of PhilHealth IDs, the PhilHealth Moves program will also feature distribution of member data record and orientation on the updates on the programs of the PhilHealth. (APB-PIA10)

SWM planning set in Oro

DE ORO CITY, October 2, 2012 (PIA) – All provincial government unit
representatives in the region are here in the city for a three-day
knowledge enhancement program on ecological solid waste management
(EWSM).
The
module is tailored fit for provincial LGUs, recognizing its role in
influencing cities and municipalities in fulfilling the mandates
provided for by RA 9003.
Regional
Director Sabdullah C. Abubacar of the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources Environmental Bureau 10 (DENR-EMB 10) said that the
current national program on solid waste management (SWM) is focused on
increasing waste diversion rate (percentage of a potentially recyclable
material that has not been diverted out of the waste disposal stream)
and
the formulation of the LGU 10-year SWM Plan as basis for the SWM
program implementation.
He
said, this activity, will help LGUs identify their roles in SWM, as
well as, areas of concerns that need to be addressed in their respective
locality.
The
participants are mostly composed of local chief executive
representatives, provincial ENR, provincial planning officers,
sangguniang panlalawigan member (Chair on health or environment), vice
chair provincial solid waste management board, district representatives,
academe, DENR PENR/CENR office coordinators, and other line agencies.

FNRI bares nutrition status in NorMin

DE ORO CITY, October 2, 2012 (PIA) – The Food and Nutrition Research
Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST)
released its latest statistical update on nutritional status here in
Northern Mindanao, through a regional dissemination forum held in the
city, last Friday.
The
forum is attended by nutrition program coordinators, nutrition action
officers, as well as, representatives from the regional development
council and non-government organizations, purposely, in aid to
identifying priority groups and possible action points for food,
nutrition, and health programs.
The
comprehensive nutrition status survey is undertaken every five years,
FNRI senior science specialist, Ma. Lilibeth P.
Dasco explained that between that five-year period they also do a
yearly updating survey among selected (following the research sampling
design) Filipinos.
She said the next comprehensive survey will not be due until year 2013.
“This
time, we have covered other population age group and not limited to
children only, as mothers among other crucial groups, needs to be
considered to prevent long term nutrition problem,” she added.
From
the 149,211 individuals nationwide who submitted for the survey in
3,136 enumeration areas, some 7,637 individuals were drawn from region
10.
Like
all other regions, Northern Mindanao was found with good number of
children delivered on normal birth weight or only 2 in every 10 children
from 0-47 months old were born with low birth weight.
Meanwhile,
the
magnitude of underweight (low weight-for-age) children from 0-5 years
is high, region 10 have exceeded the 20.2 nationwide average (already
considered high), posting a 21.9 percentage. Only Lanao del Norte and
Misamis Oriental provinces returned a 19 and 19.2 rating, respectively.
The
same result goes with the number of stunted (low height-for-age)
children, hitting very high marks in Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon.
For wasted (low weight-for-height) children on the same age bracket, Camiguin falls under the
serious state, while the rest still gets a poor mark.
FNRI
study further reveal the same trend for ages 5.08 to 10 years old,
hitting further very high marks in the number of underweight, stunted,
and wasted children in the region.
With
such turn out, FNRI called on partners to maximize the use of these
data in planning their program and projects in order to hit desired
results in cutting hunger and malnutrition. (JCV/PIA 10)
October 14 is barangay assembly day
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), region 10, urges Barangay officials to conduct a Barangay Assembly in their respective areas on the said day pursuant to Proclamation No. 260 dated September 30, 2011 issued by President Benigno S. Aquino III and DILG Memorandum Circular No. 2012-156 dated Sept. 18, 2012.
The primary objective of the event is for barangay officials and residents to have dialogue on the different issues and concerns affecting the barangay such as peace and order, disaster preparedness, solid waste management and clean-up activities.
DILG Regional Director Atty. Rene K. Burdeos said the Barangay officials shall likewise present the State of Barangay Address (SOBA) with emphasis on CY 2012 First Semester Accomplishments, Financial Reports and Updates on CY 2012 First Semester on-going programs.
The DILG calls on the barangay residents to actively involve and participate in the barangay assembly to allow them to propose innovations and measures which will contribute to the attainment of good governance in their respective barangays.
