H&E Body asks Pph1.0M funding for assistance to MDR patients
By: Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental – Concerned of the danger posed by the severe multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) patients in the city, the Committee on Health and Education, here, has proposed a funding of some Php1.0 million for their assistance.

July Luansing-Go of the Sangguniang Bayan (SB), Chairperson of the Committee said the proposed amount will cover a 12-month assistance program to about 50 MDR patients, who have been officially recorded as such by the City Health Office.

“These MDR patients need intensive continuous medication through a special treatment medical service from the German Doctors Hospital (GDH) in Cagayan de Oro City (CDO), under the Global Fund that amounts to P2,600, per month,” Go said.

She said the assistance fund from Ozamiz City will provide a counterpart of Pph1,000 per month per MDR patient and their transport to the GDH in CDO.

Meanwhile, Dr. Daniel T. Medina, City Health Officer, said TB is an air-borne disease which is very alarming and really contagious since it can be acquired by anyone through the air.

Relatedly, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) found out during their home visitations and family interview that 18 of the identified 50 MDR patients have been previously referred to the GDH.

Unfortunately, however, they did not seriously comply with the medication instruction schedule and cited their inadequate financial condition as their main reason for their failure to follow the instructions.

Ludie Salud A. Raras, CSWD Officer, observed that most of the MDR patients are bread winners, hence, they could not stay away from their families for longer period of time.

Likewise, the CSWD found out that the other 32 patients, who are declared positive of the TB disease, have to be referred to the GDH for the second batch of the MDR patients, who need a thorough treatment because their health condition is very hazardous to the populace.

Thus, the Committee on Health and Education has recommended that the amount requested be approved for the immediate treatment of the MDR patients charged to the Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Fund of the City, Go said. (PIA-10 Mis. Occ.)
