BANGSA holds roundtable discussion ARMM reform agenda
By: Apipa Bagumbaran

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur - The Bangsamoro Solidarity Movement (BANGSA), Inc. in partnership with The Asia Foundation conducted on Thursday, Feb. 03, a roundtable discussion here bringing together key stakeholders to develop a reform agenda that is responsive to the needs of the people in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The roundtable discussion dubbed as "Prospects for Reform in ARMM Amidst Burning Issues on Peace Talks and Upcoming ARMM Elections” aims to bring to the national policy makers the different perspectives of the major stakeholders in the region.

Around forty (40) stakeholders from various government, private and civil society sectors based here and in the Lanao provinces actively participated in the roundtable.

The organizers led by former Youth Commissioner Pendatun Disimban believe that it is important to hear the views and insights of the local stakeholders in the region.

They are optimistic that the reform agenda can help and guide national policy makers in addressing the problems and challenges in the ARMM.

The direction of the region must not only be based on the judgement of those who live in the national capital but also by those who can personally feel the problem on a daily basis, Disimban said.

They are ultimate beneficiaries and the real victims of the complex problems of the autonomous region, he added.

The roundtable also tackled issues on the role of the autonomous region in relation to the GRP-MILF peace process as well as the holding or postponement of ARMM elections. (Apipa Bagumbaran/PIA 10 Marawi)

Feature: Saving energy when cooking

ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte - Cooking is an activity that can cause a lot of energy and add pesos to our electricity bill.

If we can apply energy saving tips, we do not only use less power, but we also save money at the end of the month.

These Energy Conservation tips from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-ENERCON) could be a year’s resolution to keep:

Defrost all frozen foods before cooking. Doing this can reduce cooking time by as much as 50 percent. The shorter the cooking time, the less electricity used. Always ensure your ingredients are prepared before turning on the stove.

Resist buying cheap pots and pans - they’ll cost you more in the long run. A good sturdy, thick walled set will last you a lifetime and while they take a little longer to heat up, the heat distribution is better and they’ll also store heat for longer. Glass and ceramic pots and pans are said to be the most efficient.

Cover pans while cooking to prevent heat loss. Also, use low and medium settings when possible. Make sure your pan covers the coil of your range. Otherwise, you will lose energy.

When using the oven, don’t peek in to see what it looks like. Every time the door is opened, 20 percent of the heat is lost. Keep that door closed to save time and energy.

Just before your food is cooked completely, turn off the oven or burner and allow the heat in the pot or pan to continue the cooking process for you.

Always make more food than you plan to use and freeze it for your own “fast food.” Leftovers take less energy to reheat on top of the stove rather than in the oven.

For pasta lovers, make extra, toss with olive oil, and keep in the fridge so you don’t have to heat an entire pot of water to the boiling point every time you want some.

The less liquid and fat you use, the quicker the cooking time. Try one-pot cooking. Stews, soups, and other great peasant meals only take one burner to cook.

Use the microwave or pressure cooker when possible because they cook in a fraction of the time and save energy.

Use other smaller appliances like electric skillets, toasters and waffle irons when possible as they use a lot less energy than that big stove. (LVGabule, PIA Lanao del Norte/DTI ENERCON)
