MAMBAJAO, CAMIGUIN, November 4 (PIA) – Dances and chants fill the island once more as Camiguingnons offer their yearly thanksgiving for the continued harvests of its delectable lanzones fruit-unbeaten for its sweetness and remains to be desired by many.
Beautiful “diwatas” (fairies), bats, tribal kings and queens come alive to portray the legend of the fruit in colorful music and dance extravaganzas.
It talks about a tribe who decided to settle down in the island realizing how rich the land is, they lost no time in clearing the area and started to plant. As they went around the island to hunt, they came upon a tree laden with golden fruits. They quickly informed the others about their discovery and called the fruit ‘buahan’ (a corruption of the word bulahan, which means blessing), as they regarded the fruit as blessings from the good fairies.
But the fruit turned out to be poisonous, the people fell sick and so they implored the help of the fairies who magically transformed the fruit not only as a cure, but to forever satisfy the hunger of the townsfolk.
In thanksgiving for the blessing, the people celebrated and praised the diwatas for the gift, as the fruit indeed become a buahan or a blessing to them, even to this day.
Every third week of October, the province preps up for a week-long festivity.
The recently concluded 34th Lanzones Festival staged various traditional dances such as the Music and Kabog (Bats) Showdown,
Kalanrakas (Charivari-Street Dancing), Tableau Presentation, Street Dancing Competition, and the Festival King and Queen, and Diwata showdowns. Array of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as, good quality gift items and souvenirs at the Agro-Industrial Trade and Tourism Fair (UGMAD) likewise served as a treat to both locals and visitors alike.
Meanwhile, Columbia St. Michael’s Parish High School of Mahinog town dominated the win for both tableau and street-dancing competition for five consecutive years. It bested seven other contingents in the province with their liveliest, wondrous play of colors and dance moves.
Fatima College of Camiguin, representing the local government of Mambajao also grabbed the second spot for the same category, while Yumbing National High School placed third for the street dancing and fourth in the tableau.
Best in head dress and costume award was also given to Guinsiliban town contingents.
Ozamiz City is Nutrition Honor Awardee

OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental, Nov. 4 (PIA) – The city government of Ozamiz is set to receive the 2012 Nutrition Honor Award (NHA) with a cash prize of P500,000, from the National Nutrition Council (NNC) at the the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), on November 5, 2013.
The NNC confers the NHA to local government units (LGU’s) with exemplary performance in nutrition program management and has sustained reduction of prevalence of under-nutrition for both preschool and school children for six (6) consecutive years.
This was confirmed by Maria Bernardita T. Flores, Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director, in her letter, dated Oct. 8, 2013, to Mayor Reynaldo O. Parojinog, Sr., of Ozamiz City inviting him to receive the award and the cash prize at PICC in Pasay City, at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 5, 2013.
Invitation to the ceremony was extended to City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) Lelita G. Navarez and members of the Ozamiz City Nutrition Committee to compose a delegation of 10 persons.
The Assistant Secretary of Health said the Inter-Agency NNC Technical Committee has approved the recommendation of the National Nutrition Evaluation Team (NNET) to confer the 2013 NHA to Ozamiz City.
This was based on the findings of the NNET during its validation visit, last June, that affirmed the efficient and effective management of Ozamiz City’s local nutrition program, resulting in the improved nutrition status of pre and grade school children and their families, Flores said.
Last Oct. 4, the Inter-Agency Regional Nutrition Committee (IA-RNC), region 10, has also recognized Ozamiz City as Outstanding Nutrition Program Implementer during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) held at Pryce Plaza Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.
During the occasion, the Green Banner Award was given to five (5) barangays of Ozamiz, namely: Carangan, Gala, Sangay Diot, Gango and Diguan for their efforts in implementing their Barangay Nutrition Plan and the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) Award to Richel T. Bohol of Barangay Carangan.
