This award in nutrition has made the city achieve some kind of social transformation through a tedious process from its status of nutrition before, Bordeos said.

With Mayor Echavez during the forum was Lolit Navarez, nutrition program coordinator, who shared the experiences and best practices in the implementation of the City Nutrition Program that led to the the city’s winning of National Nutrition Awards. Environmental group pushes for Cagayan de Oro watershed rehab plan
By Jorie C. Valcorza

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Oct 22 (PIA) -- Coalition of local environmental groups and socio-political organizations “Sulog” has urged funding institutions, private companies, and all other agencies and sectors to help rehabilitate the Cagayan de Oro Watershed.

Raoul Geollegue, former Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-10) regional executive director and now a member of Sulog, sounded the call in the dialogue held at the DENR office in Region 10, where he presented the Cagayan de Oro River Basin Integrated Rehabilitation Framework Plan.

As it would take 25 years to establish a multi-storeyed forest plantation, the plan calls for the installation of trap canals and cultivation of slope lands in priority watershed areas to prevent risk of flooding, he said.

Batang and Bubonawan watersheds were listed as priority areas after the conduct of the erosion hazard and vulnerability assessment in the Cagayan de Oro River Basin sub-watersheds.

Such recommendation was also validated by the images produced through Google Earth, showing vast expanse of blighted land.

Although some portions of the watersheds are partly cultivated, there is a complete disregard of soil and water conservation system, Geollegue said.

He said proper use of cultivation methods such as contour farming can help protect excessive surface run off and prevent flood.

The CDO River Basin Integrated Rehabilitation Framework Plan entails growing of species with economic potential along the hedgerows, such as tiger grass for broom making, bamboo and lemon grass.

Targeting to cover 18,500 hectares of grasslands and cultivated areas, the project will take around P227 million to put up the requirement to implement the plan.

This time, the project relies solely in the multi-sectoral collective efforts of companies, non-government and civic organizations and agencies to integrate their plans and mainstream the collective endeavor of solving the problem, Geollegue said.

The DENR-10 prepared the framework plan, with technical assistance from Enterprise Works Worldwide Philippines Inc. (EWWP) under the auspices of Bukidnon Watershed River Basin Forum Follow Through Committee and the Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Council. (JCV/PIA10)
