MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur, March 03 (PIA) – To ensure that health workers in the province are healthy and empowered, the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) here, recently, launched the “Search for the Biggest Loser in Lanao del Sur,”
With the theme” Be Healthy, Be a Loser,” the competition is open to all health workers both in public and private institutions throughout the province.
Dr. Alinader Minalang, IPHO head, said the body mass index of the participants will be measured to determine if they are obese, anorexic, or healthy.
The progress of their health status will be monitored on monthly basis and whoever gets the biggest reduction in weight after six months will be adjudged as the winner, he cited.
The competition, Minalang said, is a challenge to all health workers in the province to continuously live a healthy lifestyle.
It is part of their continuing advocacy for healthy lifestyle since weight management is one of the measures to prevent the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) which is considered as one of the leading causes of death worldwide, he said.
The World Health Organization considered CVD as a global epidemic causing about 35-million deaths every year globally. In the country alone, about 500,000 Filipinos are affected by CVD, he added.
The IPHO is also considering opening the search to the general public next year. (PIA 10)

by: Apipa Bagumbaran
MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur, March 3 (PIA) --- The local police force marched to Barangay Banggolo, this city, and conducted a clean-up drive along Gomisa Avenue, last March 1.
Instead of rifles and pistols, the men and women of the Philippine National Police (PNP) carried with them broomsticks as they set out for the clean-up operations.
They were in high spirits as they segregated and disposed waste materials that clogged the street and removed receptacles containing stagnant waters which are possible breeding grounds of the dengue virus-carrying mosquitoes.
The campaign is part of their police community relations program in support for the peace and order situation of the entire province, P/SSupt. Rodolfo Asejo Llorca, PNP Provincial Director, said.
Llorca, who just assumed his post, recently, said aside from enforcing the Philippine Government law, he also plans to enforce other types of laws in the province such as the traditional law, the Shariah law and the peace and development law.
The newly-installed provincial PNP chief emphasized that the cleanliness drive is part of the peace and development law.
“We will start with the cleanliness drive which is doable by us and we will talk to everybody, go block to block and house to house until such time that the local residents realize the importance of cleanliness to peace and development,” he said.
He also said that if possible, they will conduct a one-day general clean-up drive where all the residents in the city will be required to participate.
Llorca, further, disclosed that he plans to talk with the local government units here for a consultative meet with traditional and religious leaders, prominent families in the area, academe, representatives from the MNLF and MILF and all stakeholders to declare Marawi as a neutral city.
“My vision is to make this city the ideal and model Islamic City in the Philippines and if we can correct the peace and order problems here then it will be a big help to the attainment of that vision and to the Maranao people as a whole,” he added.
The clean up drive was a collaborative undertaking of the Lanao del Sur Provincial PNP Office, Marawi City Police Office, Philippine Army, Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP)-Marawi City and Alpha Phi Omega. (PIA)

by Elaine O. Ratunil
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Mar. 3 (PIA) – The Internal Security Operations (ISO) “Bayanihan” Plan of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is about winning the peace and not winning the war.
This was clarified by Gen. Ricardo A. David, Jr., Chief of Staff, AFP, during an early morning TV show, in the city, today, March 3.
The activity was part of his sojourn trip to render his salute to the men and women of the 4th Infantry Division, Philippine Army, (4ID,PA), his first assignment after graduating from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) in 1977.
About 30 years later, he became its Division Commander, his second post prior to becoming the first CSAFP under the administration of Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III.
In his message, Gen. David has called on all the citizens not only of Northern Mindanao but of the entire country, to do their share to achieve peace.
His appeal was also extended to all the militant and rebel groups, like the New People’s Army/National Democratic Front (NPA/NDF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
“Nobody benefits from fighting which we know have been very counter productive. We need to have real peace so development can take place in our communities,” he said.
Meanwhile, the CSAFP said he is very supportive of the move to rid the AFP of misfits who tend to smear the institution which is the bulwark of security for the country.
He said he welcomes the investigations made by the House of Representatives and the Senate on the alleged corruption committed by some of retired officers of the AFP.
“But those allegations happened about seven (7) years ago when I was not yet the CSAFP and within that period, there has been a lot of reforms that were implemented to improve the services of the AFP,” he assured. (PIA-10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Mar. 3 (PIA) – Lanao del Norte (LDN) is one of the provinces in Region 10 that has the highest poverty incidence.
But with the help of the KALAHI-CIDSS project, it is now on its way towards development as more of its barangays will be constructing their community-driven development projects under the KALAHI-CIDSS program of the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
These projects which come in the form of seawall, farm to market roads, foot path, rice mill, solar drier and warehouse are expected to bring down the expenditure of the people for the constant repair of their homes that are often destroyed by the waves during high tide.
Among the areas where these projects will be constructed are: Barangay Camalan, Lower Sta. Cruz, Matampay Bucana, Tunaan, Darumawang Bucana, Andil and Lanipao, all in Lala, of the province.
These areas have different stories to tell, but they will share one common experience -a KALAHI-CIDSS experience, Atty. Araceli F. Solamillo, Regional Director of DSWD-10, said.
She said the efforts of the KALAHI-CIDSS implementers coupled with the continuous support of the local government unit of Lala Mayor Allan Lim and LDN Gov. Khalid Dimaporo empowered more people and developed more communities in their areas.
Meanwhile, Bacolod and Kapatagan towns of LDN already received their KALAHI-CIDSS projects that included the potable water systems, day care and health centers, farm to market roads, concrete drainage systems and post harvest facilities which the communities themselves have chosen. (PIA-10)

by Rodolfo D. Mendoza
