'Siyaget sa Kinaiyahan' enters school zones
NEARLY a thousand 1st-4th year students of the Lorenzo Tan National High School (LTNHS) attended the symposium conducted by the Siyaget sa Kinaiyahan (Shout of Nature) Volunteer Movement in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental, July 11,
Earlier, the group conducted a similar activity at the Northwestern Mindanao State College, also in the city.
Siyaget sa Kinaiyahan volunteer Moriele T. Quiap, Tangub City Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation chairperson and president of the supreme student government of LTNHS, said the activity is part of three major SK programs they are currently implementing in the city--sports, culture and arts, and environment.
With the theme “Kinaiyahan Bililhon, Atong Ampingan (Nature Is Precious, Let’s Treasure It),” the series of symposia aims to educate the youth and raise their level of awareness on how to protect and rehabilitate the environment.
Information on global warming and climate change was also imparted to students, including the benefits of bio-intensive gardening.
One of the speakers even shared the experience of their effort in their barangay in putting up a shell garden and intensive tree planting.
The students were also advised not to eat junk foods because they contain chemicals that are harmful to the body, but instead go into vegetable gardening and plant fruit trees so they will have fresh vegetables and fruits available in their respective households.
Already the Siyaget Sa Kinaiyahan conducted symposia to 23 of the city’s 55 barangays, two schools, and one church.
After this, they will go back to the barangays to monitor how the SK implemented the programs it committed to pursue.
The SK team is scheduled to hold a seminar on ecological awareness for the SK chairmen of the 55 barangays and other volunteers before the end of September, this year. (Judith B. Tablan & Richly Tagbacaula, Tangub City Information Office/PIA-Tangub City i-Net)
